âWe donât know if that blood is hers or not,â Tony calmly tried to reassure me. âIt could be from either of these two. We just donât know, so keep it together.â
A banging noise to our right caught our attention. We both swiftly came about and trained our flashlights down the darkened alleyway in front of us. We took aim as the beam played over a green dumpster that had rust eating away at its exterior. We slowly moved to the right a bit more and spotted a handful of infected. Huddling close together, they turned their attention in our direction.
Their chests heaved, the redness of their eyes as vivid as the blood on the ground. Spit sprayed from between their cracked lips as they growled louder.
One by one, they barreled out of the darkness at us with their mouths ajar and their arms wildly swinging. We opened fire, surgically taking down the feral people with headshots. Their bodies crumbled to the road as the eerie silence resumed.
Keeping the 9-mm in a ready state, I checked each of the infected. Fortunately, I didnât see Eliana or Billy among the dead bodies.
Bang... bang...
Multiple gunshots stole our attention away from the dead bodies. We frantically looked searching for the disturbance. Quiet fell once more, but only briefly before two more rounds sounded off.
We trained our ears, intently listening to try and gauge the direction it came from. It sounded close but slightly muffled. Perhaps it came from inside one of the abandoned buildings close to us.
âThere!â Tony pointed to a building to our left. âTop floor.â
Glancing up at the derelict structure, I noticed a brief flash of light that quickly faded away.
We made a mad dash for the building. The most egregious thoughts continued to plague my mind, tormenting me with every step I took. The worst being finding her body after being ravaged by those things. If I lost Eliana, Iâd have nothing left to fight for.
Approaching the open entrance to the apartment structure, we trained our weapons ahead as our flashlights illuminated the impoverished interior. We held up briefly and took stock of the mess of junk and furniture that littered the lobby floor. There appeared to be no infected in sight, but we had to stay vigilant.
I took point and moved inside with Tony close to my six. We swept the lobby and moved to the staircase to the far right. Taking each rung with swift purpose, we climbed to the first floor.
My heart beat rapidly, palms sweating as I tried to keep a firm grip on the 9-mm. Beads raced down the side of my head, dripping from my jaw. We headed down the long narrow hallway, checking the rooms with open doors as we passed by.
Something moved the way we came and stopped us cold. We came about and took aim. An infected emerged from one of the rooms we passed by. It peered in our direction and came for us. Tony cut it down with a single shot to the chest from his Remington.
